Michael Paul Millett (born September 22, 1977 in Wigan , † September 21, 1995 in Garswood ) was an English football player . The Wigan Athletic midfielder died in a car accident the day before his 18th birthday.

Career

Millett went through the Wigan Athletic Center of Excellence before he was awarded a trainee contract and captained the U-14 and U-15. Although the Wigan professional team at that time only played fourth rate, Millett's talent was not hidden from the association coaches and he was part of the English squad at the U-16 European Championship in 1994 and played with the English national school team at Wembley Stadium . Shortly after his 17th birthday Millett received his first professional contract and finally made his debut in April 1995 against FC Walsall in the Football League Third Division . By the end of the season, the midfielder, who is strong in running and two-way combat, made three appearances. In the early stages of the 1995/96 season, he also played once in the League Cup .

One day before his 18th birthday on September 21, 1995, Millett had a fatal accident while driving home from a training session at Garswood when his vehicle hit a tree. In the subsequent league game against Plymouth Argyle , a minute's silence was inserted. The club's internal award for the best young player of the year is called the "Michael Millett Award".
