Michael Sean Redmond (born May 25, 1963 in Santa Barbara , California , USA) is a professional American Go player and one of the few western professionals in this game, which is dominated by East Asian players. He has published Go literature, worked as a commentator for the NHK channel and is a sponsor of many activities related to the Go game, such as the Redmond Cup.

He is considered one of the strongest Western Go players and has held the 9th Professional Dan since 2000, the highest possible rating for a player in Go. He was the first Western Go player ever to achieve this rank.

biography

Michael Redmond started playing Go at the age of eleven and became an insi (student) at Nihon Ki-in in Japan at 14 . At the age of 18 he was awarded the 1st professional dan rank, the 2nd professional dan followed in the same year. He got the 3rd professional Dan in 1983 and was at that time the first western player to reach this rank. He received the 5th professional Dan in 1985, the 8th professional Dan in 1996 and the 9th and last in 2000.

Michael Redmond has so far not won a title in his career, but took second place in the NEC Shun-Ei in 1990 and second place in the Shinjin-O in 1992. He also reached the semi-finals of the Fujitsu Cup, the Tong Yang Cup and the Gosei Tournament (2006). In 2010 he reached the quarter-finals at the 36th Tengen tournament. That same year he beat Cho U in the first round of the 17th Agon tournament.

In August 2006, he taught at the AGA East Coast Go Camp in Pennsylvania and participated in the 22nd annual US Go Congress in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

In 2005, he was voted the best commentator on the NHK channel for his commentary on Go games.

In 2016, he commented on the Google DeepMind Challenge , in which the machine learning- based AI AlphaGo competed against multiple world champion Lee Sedol .

Personal

Michael Redmond is married to the Chinese professional Go player Niu Xian-Xian . The couple have two daughters. He lives in Tokyo, Japan.
