Michael Schillmeier

Michael Schillmeier (born August 25, 1963 in Erbendorf ) is a German social scientist . He is a professor in the Department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology at the University of Exeter . In his research he mainly deals with the relationship between science, technology and society as well as questions of physicality, the theory of the social and ontology. His work is in the tradition of Science and Technology Studies .

Life

Michael Schill Meier in 1963 in Bavaria Erbendorf born. He initially studied at the University of Regensburg , but then moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University , where he came into contact with the sociology of risk, the environment and science under Ulrich Beck . In 1996 he graduated with a study on reflective modernization and in the following two years did a doctorate at the University of Lancaster with John Law . In 2005 he completed his dissertation there on the subject of "Materiality and Blindness".

In the following years he conducted research in Spain, among other things, on the phenomenon of dementia . Since 2009 he has headed the “Innovations in Nanomedicine ” project at LMU, which is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation as part of a Schumpeter Fellowship. In 2012 he was appointed to the University of Exeter , where he holds a professorship in the Department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology .

Schillmeier researches questions of science, the environment and physicality. In the foreground of his work are their effects on living together, politics and the understanding of nature and society. In addition to theoretical discussions, Schillmeier also conducts ethnographies in laboratories in his research project on nanomedicine . To understand disability , he wrote the monograph Rethinking Disability in 2010 , which tries to grasp disability beyond the poles of social constructivism and anatomical determinism . Together with Juliane Sarnes, he translated Gabriel Tardes Monadology and Sociology into German.
