Michael Walsh (music critic)

Michael Walsh (* 1949 in Jacksonville , North Carolina ) is an American music critic and writer .

Life

After studying musicology, Walsh worked as a reporter for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle from 1972 . In 1977 he became a music critic for the San Francisco Examiner and 1981-97 for Time Magazine .

His books include Carnegie Hall: The First One Hundred Years (1987), Who's Afraid of Classical Music (1989), Andrew Lloyd Webber: His Life and Works (1989, revised 1997), and Who's Afraid of Opera? (1994). He wrote the novels Exchange Alley (1997), As Time Goes By (follow-up to the film Casablanca (1942), 1998) and And All the Saints (2003).

Today he is Professor of Journalism at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester .
