Michaelskapelle (Freiburg-Haslach)
The Michaelskapelle in the Freiburg district of Haslach is a secular former Roman Catholic church building.
history
The first mention of a church in the village of Haslach comes from the year 1275. Like all towns in Baden, Haslach became Protestant after the Reformation . With the St. Michael's Chapel, consecrated on August 4, 1866, a Catholic church building was again built after about a year of construction, the forerunner of St. Michael's Church, which is located on the same site. The St. Michaelskapelle was built in 1865 on what was then Gutleutstrasse as a result of a collection in the Catholic and Protestant community, which brought in a sum of 5000 guilders. The associated parish curate was established in 1903.
With the incorporation of Haslach into Freiburg in 1890, the number of Catholics grew rapidly, so that the small church was no longer sufficient. In 1909 the new St. Michaels Church was completed. The chapel was still used as a church until October 17, 1909. On this date the Holy of Holies was transferred to the new church to the east. The chapel, popularly called 's alt Kirchle , was still used for events for a while; it was used as a storage room. After the First World War , the roof turret (bell tower) and the stone border of the portal were dismantled.
Until 2007, financial problems and an uncertain future ensured that no plans for re-use were implemented. Demolition plans in the early 1990s in favor of tram construction were not implemented. It was only when the parsonage was rented out that it was possible to renovate it and convert it into a parish office based on suggestions from the architect Stefan Ruch. The light and light building now houses the office and a café, which is operated jointly by disabled and non-disabled people.
