Michel Murr

Michel Murr ( Arabic ميشال المرّ Mischal al-Murr , * 1932 in Bteghrine ) is a Lebanese politician and businessman. He is a member of the Rum Orthodox Church .

Life

Murr studied in Beirut and Paris architecture and founded in 1957 in Beirut a construction company. In 1968 he became a member of parliament for the Metn district. In 1972 he was not re-elected, but remained active in politics. In 1992 he was re-elected to parliament. Murr became Minister of Housing in 1979 and Minister of Telecommunications from 1980 to 1982. After the civil war he was Vice Prime Minister and Interior Minister from 1990 to November 2000. After leaving the cabinet, he retained his parliamentary mandate and became Vice President of Parliament in 2004. Murr is considered pro-Syrian and very controversial. He has been linked to election fraud. In 2005 he forged a political alliance with ex-general Michel Aoun , the Free Patriotic Movement party .

After leaving the cabinet, his son Elias Murr took over the post of interior minister (2000 to 2004) and then that of defense minister.

Michel Murr's brother, Elias Murr Sr., is a businessman in the construction industry and owner of the Murr-TV channel, which was closed by the government in 2000 due to anti-Syrian stance. The brothers are considered to be at odds.
