Michelle Magorian

Michelle Jane Magorian (born November 6, 1947 in Southsea , Portsmouth ) is a British author and actress.

She grew up in Singapore , then lived for some time in Australia and later in Paris, where she was a student of Marcel Marceau and took singing, ballet and acting lessons. In 1982 she received the Guardian Award for her 1981 book Goodnight Mr Tom , which was published in German under the title Der Junge aus London . The novel is about a boy who is evacuated from London during the air raids of World War II and is taken in by a lonely old man. It was filmed in 1998 with John Thaw , will also be seen as a play in 2008 and has since been translated into 13 languages. Another work that also deals with World War II is Back Home . Michelle Magorian was inspired to write these books by her mother's stories about her time as a nurse.

Michelle Magorian lives in New Hampshire with her two sons.
