Michelle Perrot (born May 18, 1928 in Paris ) is a French historian and feminist. She is a professor emeritus at the University of Paris VII (Denis Diderot) and mainly deals with the 19th century, legal history and women's history.

Originally coming from left-wing Catholicism, it was shaped by the 1968 student movement and Marxism. She completed her habilitation (Thèse de doctorat) in 1974 with Ernest Labrousse at the Sorbonne on the labor movement (published as Les ouvriers en grève , 2 volumes, Paris, Mouton, 1974, translated: workers on strike). She then taught at the University of Paris VII.

She then researched the penal system in the 19th century. From 1986 to 1991 she held a seminar on prisons in the Third Republic at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales together with the lawyer Robert Badinter ; at that time she also worked with Michel Foucault . With Georges Duby she published a five-volume history of women in the west in 1991/92. With a series of essays and books, she made a name for herself as the leading historian of women's history in France from the 1980s onwards.

She is a Knight of the Legion of Honor and the Ordre national du Mérite .

She writes for Liberation and has regularly participated in France-Culture's history programs.
