Forefront Threat Management Gateway
The Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway (Forefront TMG) , formerly known as Internet Security and Acceleration Server (short: ISA or ISA Server ), is a firewall with stateful packet inspection and application layer inspection as well as VPN and web cache / proxy (Forward and reverse cache) functionality. The ISA server requires Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 as the platform . It replaces the built-in Windows firewall and extends the routing and remote access functions.
The TMG server is used primarily as part of the firewall concept ( DMZ ). In particular, the ISA server is used in companies to provide services of the Exchange server (e.g. OWA , RPC over HTTP, ActiveSync, OMA) or the web server on the Internet.
Previous versions prior to 2000 were called Microsoft Proxy Server .

Since ISA Server 2000 there has been a Standard Edition as well as an Enterprise Edition, which offers extended array and load balancing functionality.
In December 2009, Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) 2010 was the successor to ISA Server 2006. In addition to the Standard and Enterprise Edition, there is an additional edition, the Medium Business Edition, which can be up to max. 300 clients is designed.
A new feature is the ability to receive updates for URL filtering and malware filtering via Web Protection Services (subscription from Microsoft).
Discontinuation of the Forefront product line
On September 12th, 2012 Microsoft announced that the Forefront Server will be discontinued on December 1st, 2012. Mainstream support ran until April 14, 2015. The discontinuation of further development affects the variants
