Middelgrundsfortet is an artificial island in the Øresund strait between Zealand (Denmark) and Scania (Sweden), in the connection of the Baltic Sea with the Kattegat . The island was founded in 1890 under the rule of King Christian IX. Built as a sea fortress and part of the fortification of Copenhagen made of granite for military purposes. It is 300 meters long, up to 180 meters wide and has an area of around seven hectares. The island is about 15 minutes by boat from Copenhagen and has an official helipad. The island is built up with around 15,000 m² and served tourist purposes until 2014. It was sold to the Danish Scout Association (Det Danske Spejderkorps) in 2015 and is currently under renovation. It was not open to the public because of the dilapidation and construction work. Ungdomsøen ("The Youth Island ") opened in August 2019.
