The Middle Bay Light , also known as Middle Bay Lighthouse or Mobile Bay Lighthouse , is a 1885 erbauter, historic lighthouse in Mobile Bay , off the coast of the State of Alabama of the United States .
After the completion of the Mobile Ship Channel , USD 19,000 was granted in 1883 (corresponds to approx. USD 475,000 in 2018) to build a lighthouse to mark the fairway in the middle of Mobile Bay. The "lighthouse", which was completed in December 1885, is a one-and-a-half-story wooden building with a hexagonal floor plan and a diameter of approx. 12 meters, erected on braced steel stilts. The light signal used was a white continuous light with a red light flash every 30 seconds and was located approx. 12 meters above the water surface. The lighthouse, about 8.5 km from the mainland, served the lighthouse keeper and his family as an apartment. In 1905 the lighting system was renovated and automated in 1935. The lighthouse has been uninhabited since then. Thanks to civic engagement, the demolition of the lighthouse was prevented in 1967 and renovation work began. On December 30, 1974, the Middle Bay Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places (German: "National Directory of Historic Places"). In 2003, the Middle Bay Light was supplemented by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program with a real-time weather station whose data can be called up online.
