A climber on Midnight Lightning

Midnight Lightning is a short climbing route ( boulder ) on the premises of Camp 4 in the Yosemite Valley in California (USA). It is on the northeast side of a boulder called Columbia Boulder . In 1978 the route was considered to be one of the toughest climbing problems in the world. It was first climbed by Ron Kauk in 1978 and named after a song by Jimi Hendrix , but also because the key handle resembles a jagged lightning bolt. The path has the difficulty V8 . The second ascent was secured a little later by John Bachar . In 1984 Jerry Moffatt was the first to succeed in an ascent within a day. The first women's ascent by Lynn Hill followed in 1998 .

The route goes through a side of the block marked with a lightning bolt. This hangs over about 30 degrees and is quite unstructured. At a height of four meters there is a larger roof, over which the wall lies. Before the first ascent, Ron Kauk and John Bachar tried the site for months before they could solve the problem.
