The Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne w Częstochowie Sp. Z oo , the Municipal Transport Company in Częstochowa GmbH , MPK for short, is a local transport company in the Polish city of Częstochowa . The MPK, founded on March 1, 1950, operates both buses and, since March 8, 1959, a regular-gauge tram .

The plans for a tram in the Polish pilgrimage site go back to 1903. However, this failed because the potential operators, the city and the supervisory authority could not agree on the conditions. In 1908 a horse bus was set up instead . Finally, twenty years later, buses were used. After the end of the Second World War , two private entrepreneurs began to maintain bus routes. However, the eight lines with a length of 30 kilometers were nationalized and on March 1, 1950, became part of the newly founded MPK .

After a large steelworks went into operation in Częstochowa in 1951 , construction of a tram line began in the same year. In 1959, the 7.1 kilometer long track opened on March 8th. It began in the residential area of Dzielnica 1000-lecia and ended at the gates of the steel mill in Kucelin . A 1.5-kilometer section to Rakow was opened on July 21 . Due to the low number of passengers, this route only existed until 1971, when it was abandoned.

In 1971 the existing route from the beginning of the district was extended by 2.2 kilometers to the edge of the district of Dzielnica 1000-lecia . In 1984 another 400 m followed to the current end of the line in Fieldorfa-Nila Street in the Północ residential area . Thus it had reached a length of 12 kilometers.

In 1991, the companies were briefly renamed Miejski Zakład Komunikacji , i.e. Municipal Transport Company. After their bankruptcy, the old name Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne was reintroduced.

Today five lines are operated on the route.
