Location of the Miinisadam naval base in Estonia

Miinisadam is the base of operations for the Estonian Naval Forces . In Põhja-Tallinn Located military port is home to the Naval Forces Merevägi and the garrison of the Estonian guard battalion Vahipataljon .

history

The construction of the naval base in Tallinn dates back to 1912, when Estonia was still part of the Russian Empire . When the country first achieved its independence at the beginning of the 20th century, the port facilities still under construction were taken over and completed by the Estonian naval forces.

With the annexation of Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1940, the country's navy (and with it the military port Miinisadam) was integrated into the Baltic fleet . The Soviet Union (and its successor Russia ) used the base until 1994. In the course of Estonia's regained independence, the establishment was taken over by its newly established naval forces. In the period that followed, extensive renovation and modernization of the port area began.

Stationed units & facilities

Today, various Estonian naval facilities ( Mereväebaas and Mereväekool ) are located on the site of the naval base . In addition, the port is used as a base for the fleet ( Laevastik ).

The Estonian Guard Battalion ( Vahipataljon ) has also been stationed at the base since 2015 .
