Mike Kress

Mike Kress (born May 9,  1968 ) is an American basketball coach . He was the head coach of the Austrian women's national team.

career

The Chicago native Kress studied at Villanova University in the US state of Pennsylvania and at the University of St. Francis (State of Illinois ). From 1987 to 1991 he was an assistant coach at St. Rita High School in Chicago, and between 1991 and 2001 he held this position at the University of St. Francis. At the same time he was the head coach of the college's second basketball team (junior varsity). In the 2001/02 season, Kress was an assistant coach on the staff of Kennedy-King College. In addition, Kress worked as a trainer at numerous camps.

In 2002 he went to Austria and took up the position of co-trainer for the Bundesliga team and head of the youth department at UKJ St. Pölten . In 2006 he moved from St. Pölten to the Kapfenberg Bulls , for whom he worked as a youth coach until 2009. In the 2009/10 season Kress was assistant coach of the Greek first division club AS Trikala, in 2010 he returned to Austria and took over the post of head coach at the women's Bundesliga club UBBC Herzogenburg. Kress, who is married to the former Austrian basketball player Edith Minarz, stayed in office until 2012. In 2011 he became head coach of the Austrian women's national team, in 2012 and 2014 the team under Kress' leadership won the European championship for small countries. Kress was the women's national coach until 2014, and in the summer of 2015 he was responsible for Austria's female U20 national team.

In 2013, he took up the post of full-time youth coach at the Viennese association Basket Flames and consequently exercised this partly parallel to his activities for the Austrian Basketball Association. In the summer of 2016, he left the Flames and initially retired from basketball for personal reasons. He later worked again as a coach at basketball camps. Kress contributed to the work of the Lower Austrian Basketball Association as a trainer. Until the end of November 2019 he was a trainer for the Vienna Basketball Association.
