Michael W. "Mike" Quarry (born March 4, 1951 in Bakersfield , California , † June 11, 2006 in La Habra , California) was an American boxer of Irish descent. He is the brother of Jerry Quarry .

Life

Mike Quarry started boxing at the age of eight, but only received an official license as an amateur boxer when he was seventeen. In 1968 he tried to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games, but was disqualified in an elimination match for illegal ducking below the belt.

Since his brother, Jerry Quarry, was a well-known heavyweight boxer, he was compared to him throughout his life. Quarry himself copied the style of the big brother, which is why he was often only touted as Jerry Quarry's little brother .

On June 27, 1972 Quarry lost his only title fight against then world champion Bob Foster in the fourth round by knockout . At the same event, his brother faced Muhammad Ali and lost out prematurely.

Mike Quarry died on June 11, 2006 at the age of 55 from dementia pugilistica , a special form of dementia . Mike Quarry was buried in Shafter , California, near his brother, who had died of complications from the same illness.
