The Mil Mi-40 ( Russian Миль Ми-40 ) was presented as a project at the Aerosalon 1993 in Le Bourget. As a heavily armed troop transport for eight fully equipped soldiers, it was intended as the successor to the Mi-24 . Technologically, however, it was more of a further development of the Mi-28 .

The Mi-40 should be equipped with a fully articulated 23mm cannon and sensors in the bow. The tail rotor had the X-shape known from the Mi-28. For the first time, however, a fully articulated 12.7 mm MG was also arranged in the rear of the fuselage, which was supposed to cover the rear of the helicopter.
