The Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel (English: Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel ) is located in the city of Bella Vista in the US state of Arkansas and was built by the architects Euine Fay Jones and Maurice Jennings . The chapel was built by her family members in honor of Mildred B. Cooper and was completed on April 2, 1988. In addition to weddings, baptisms and funerals, concerts and other cultural events are held in the chapel today. The building is one of the main attractions of the city of Bella Vista.

location

The memorial chapel is located just a few hundred meters northeast of the city center of Bella Vista in a small forest on a hill and is completely surrounded by tall trees. The wooded area is bounded to the north and east by Lake Norwood, which can be seen from the chapel. The chapel can be reached via a forest path from the parking lot located about a hundred meters south.

architecture

Detail view of the south facade

The architecture of the building is based on Gothic architecture and takes up the design principles of Frank Lloyd Wright . The design of the chapel was adapted to the nature. Due to the large windows, natural light is the main source of light.

The chapel is a steel and wood structure with large glazed walls on a stone foundation. A total of 31 tons of steel and 4,460 m² of glass were used in the construction. The stone floor and the roof construction made of wood and steel are kept in subtle brown tones. The chapel is 7.3 meters wide, 19.8 meters long and 15.2 meters high.

The roof structure is divided into 15 main arches with a height of 15.2 meters. The main arches rest on a small stone wall. There are three or four Gothic pointed arches between the main arches . The large windows between the arches allow the view of the surrounding forest as much as possible. Due to the numerous arches of the roof structure and the surrounding trees, there is a different light pattern inside the chapel, depending on the time of day.

The north and south walls are shaped like a pointed arch and have a similar structure. Large parts of both walls are taken up by a single large glass surface in the form of a pointed arch, which is surrounded above by a wooden surface. The wooden surface contains a rosette made of glass without color or ornaments. The large ogival glass surface is traversed by many intersecting thin beams, creating a pattern of pointed arches. The glass surface of the south wall encloses the wooden and also ogival entrance door of the building. In the north wall, this area is glazed and does not contain any beams, allowing a view of the forest.

The memorial chapel offers a total of 120 seats.

Awards
