Life

After finishing school, Rohde studied painting with Peter Voigt and sculpture with Bodo Kampmann from 1955 to 1958 at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts . At the same time, he studied architecture and civil engineering at the TU Braunschweig from 1957 to 1963 . During this time he continued to occupy himself with art and in 1959 won the 1st prize "Carolina Wilhelmina" for painting and sculpture in Braunschweig.

After completing his studies, Rohde worked mainly in Asia, Central and South America from 1963 to 1972, including two years as an expert in Afghanistan on behalf of the United Nations and four years as a senior engineer at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras . There he was recognized as a "Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering" on August 29, 1970. His ties to this continent remained intact and he therefore founded the "Aachen Institute for Afghanistan" (AIAS) in 2008, which he headed until 2010 held.

Effective April 17, 1973, Rohde took up a position as Scientific Councilor at RWTH Aachen University and was appointed full professor of water energy management on January 1, 1987 .

Before he retired in 2001, Rohde wrote a year earlier for the senior students of philosophy at the RWTH Aachen. At the same time, he revived his passion for art in the mid-1990s and created numerous works, which he presented at various solo and group exhibitions from 1997 onwards. In addition, he was involved in various art institutions and became a member of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK), whose Aachen-Euregio department he headed from 2003 to 2010 as 1st chairman. From 2007 he also took over the chairmanship of the “Forum for Art and Culture Herzogenrath” and the management of the “Eurode-Bahnhof-Herzogenrath Exhibition House” and in 2011 he founded the “Kulturwerk Aachen e. V. "

In these functions, Rohde organizes numerous events such as various panel discussions on art-related topics or art events such as the “Euregio Art Tour”. In addition, he repeatedly accepts invitations to lectures at RWTH Aachen University, the Volkshochschule Aachen or the Bavarian State Library as well as at renowned companies such as Gypsilon and T-Systems in Aachen or Emprise in Hamburg .

Artistic works

Rohde's art spectrum is extremely varied and reflects a cross-section of contemporary art . His installations are made of baked clay, his sculptures are made of plaster of paris, bronze, concrete or stainless steel and his sculptural works are made of sandstone, terracotta or marble. When painting, he prefers techniques in gouache , acrylic or encaustic . In doing so, he makes use of pictorial patterns that appear both familiar and puzzling to the viewer, without impairing the perception of the overarching structures and ideas of order. Computer-generated works of art also play an important role for Rohde , in which he uses a random generator to create various alternations of colors and elements with abstract patterns, as well as an abundance of variations.
