The Military Medical Medal of Honor was donated in gold and silver by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria on November 8, 1812 and could be awarded to all military personnel who distinguished themselves in times of war on the battlefield or in hospitals at risk of caring for the wounded and sick to have.

The obverse shows the bust of the donor, facing left, in a general's uniform with the inscription MAXIMILIANUS JOSEPHUS REX BOIOARIAE. On the reverse, surrounded by a laurel wreath , the inscription OB MILITES INTER PRAELIS ET ARTE ET VIRTUTE SERVATOS can be read.

The award was worn on a black ribbon on the left chest.

The award of the medal was stopped at the end of 1871.
