The Prešov military airfield , slow. Letecká základňa Prešov , is a military airfield of the Air Force of the Slovak Republic , Veliteľstvo vzdušných síl OS SR (VVzS). It is located about 6 km northeast of the city of Prešov in the east of the country. It is the base of the Slovak helicopter fleet.

history

Until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia , the base served the armed forces of the ČSSR only as a reserve. After the division of the country, it became the base of the Slovak rotary wing aircraft. It was initially referred to as 4 Vrtulníkový Pluk and from the end of 1995 as 34 Vrtulníkové Krídlo (34 VrK). Two combat helicopters, equipped with Mi-24s , and two transport helicopter squadrons that used the Mi-2 and Mi-17M / Mi-17LZPS were stationed here. In autumn 2001 the base was renamed 3 Letecká základňa . It was later given its current name. While the Mi-24 was decommissioned without replacement, the Mi-17M transport helicopters were replaced by UH-60M , the first of which arrived in 2017.

Military use

The base is (as of 2019) the home of the Slovak helicopter fleet, which is subordinate to the Vrtulníkové krídlo "Jána Ambruša" helicopter squadron with two flying squadrons. The association is a traditional association in memory of Ján Ambruš, who was a Czechoslovak fighter pilot during the Second World War a. a. commanded the (Czechoslovak) 312nd Squadron of the RAF .
