The Chernyakhovsk military airfield ( Russian аэродром Черняховск ) is a Russian military airfield near Chernyakhovsk in the Kaliningrad Oblast . Insterburg Air Base was located here from 1936 to 1945 .

history

The air base was established in the mid-1930s on the site of a civil airfield that had existed since 1928. When the air base command moved in on October 1, 1936, military flight operations officially began. There were five large aircraft hangars on the southern border of the air base, while a large repair hangar stood west of the runway. There were also other farm and accommodation buildings in the south. Reconnaissance Group 111 was the first airborne unit to be stationed here from October 1936. From 1939 the Insterburg Stuka school was located here, which was later renamed Stukaschule 1. The BFS 7 (blind flight school) and later the BFS 9 was also located here since November 1940.

The following table shows a list of selected active flying units (excluding school and supplementary units) of the Wehrmacht Air Force that were stationed here between 1936 and 1945.
