Millennium Cross Skopje
The Millennium Cross ( Macedonian : Милениумски крст) is a large steel frame cross on the summit of the Vodno Mountain above the North Macedonian capital Skopje .
Location and surroundings
The Millennium Cross stands on the top of Skopj's local mountain Vodno at an altitude of 1040 meters. It can be reached by two streets, one of which is partially closed halfway up (except on weekends), so that approximately four kilometers have to be covered on foot or by bike. Antennas of communication devices are in the immediate vicinity. From the mountain you have a good view of the city of Skopje and the surrounding mountains.
Construction and data
The cross is a 66 meter high and 42 meter wide steel frame construction. The footprint of the vertical stele is 6 by 6 meters. The cross is a symbolic construct. The foundation consists of four pillars, corresponding to the four evangelists . The basement has 12 columns corresponding to the 12 apostles . The cross is built from 33 floors. This corresponds to the 33 years of Jesus' life. It is an Orthodox and not a Latin cross . This is indicated by the square that was constructed around the crossing point. It is also different from Russian Orthodox crosses , which have a second sloping beam.
The cross is illuminated at night and can be seen from all over the city, including the predominantly Muslim old town. It was and is therefore perceived by many as a targeted provocation.
history
The Millennium Cross was inaugurated in 2002.
