Millom Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Millom in the English county of Cumbria . English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building and is a Scheduled Monument .

history

Around 1134 Godard de Boyvill , already the owner of the Millom manor , received a manor on the site of the current castle ruins. Around 1240 this manor came into the possession of the Hudleston family when Boyville's granddaughter married into the family. In 1335 John Hudleston received royal permission to fortify his mansion (English: License to Crenellate). The great tower dates from the 16th or 17th century. It was badly damaged in an artillery attack in 1648 during the English Civil War .

In 1739 the walls of the castle were in a state of disrepair. The big tower is now a farmhouse.
