Miltiades the Elder
Miltiades the Elder was an Athenian who lived in the mid- 6th century BC. Chr. A principality on the peninsula Chersonesus , now Gallipoli founded. As the ancient historian Herodotus reports, the Thracian-born Dolonkers who lived there were threatened by the neighboring Absinthians and turned to the Oracle of Delphi . This advised them to seek military assistance in Greece. In Athens the Dolonkers allegedly met Miltiades, who, dissatisfied with his personal situation under Peisistratos , gathered around him willing to resettle and set off for Chersonese.
During a campaign against the city of Lampsakos, Miltiades was captured, but released on the intervention of the Lydian king Kroisos .
After Miltiades' death the rule went to his nephew Ithagoras. After he was murdered, his brother, Miltiades the Younger , the general of the Battle of Marathon , came to power.
