The plans for the rebuilding of the area date back to the 1960s. The determination of the project name was given to the citizens of Yokohama in a competition in 1981. The first construction work started in November 1983. First, the Nippon Maru Memorial Park was completed in 1985 . The first major projects followed in 1989 with the Yokohama Exotic Showcase '89 (YES '89), the Yokohama Art Museum and the opening of the Yokohama Bay Bridge . The defining buildings of the skyline are the Pacifico Yokohama (1991), the tallest skyscraper in Japan until the beginning of 2014, the Yokohama Landmark Tower (1993), Queen's Square Yokohama (1997) and the CosmoClock 21 ferris wheel.

Parts of the area are still being developed; some sections are under construction or planned.

In 2004 the Minatomirai line was opened, which creates a connection to Yokohama Station and Chinatown .
