MSA Safety Incorporated (formerly: Mine Safety Appliances ), headquartered in Cranberry Township in the US state of Pennsylvania, is a manufacturer of safety technology for the main use in rescue services and industries with a special hazard potential, for example the mining and oil and gas extraction industries.
history
MSA was founded in 1914 by mining engineer John T. Ryan Sr. and colleague George H. Deike. A mine accident in West Virginia in 1912, which was caused by the ignition of firedamp and killed over 80 men, is considered to be the triggering moment for the founding of the company . In collaboration with Thomas Alva Edison , the founders developed an electric helmet lamp with battery operation, which should replace the use of more dangerous miner's lamps with an open flame. Edison is credited with saying that of all his inventions, this one would have benefited humankind most. Today, MSA sells a wide variety of self-protection equipment in hazardous environments, including respiratory protective equipment, fall protection systems, measurement equipment and items for head, eye and hearing protection. In 2002, the French company CGF Gallet , the developer of the popular Gallet F1 fire helmet, was taken over. The former Auergesellschaft is now also part of the MSA Group.
