history

The Miners' Library opened on November 1, 1756 as one of the first public libraries in Scotland. It was initially open to miners from the surrounding mines. It was financed through contributions from readers and grants from the mining companies. The Duke of Buccleuch also supported the institution. In addition to promoting education, the library should also contribute to calming the rough miners. Borrowing was only possible after a briefing and subsequent issue of a certificate. As in the year it was founded, in 1784 the library had a total of 32 male members. It should be emphasized that she also had a female member this year, so that the facility can be considered progressive for its time. Over the years it has moved three times. Today the library is part of the Museum for Lead Mining .
