The Minervabrunnen , now also known as the Fischmarktbrunnen , is a baroque fountain in Hamburg-Altona .

history

A wooden fountain has stood on the Altona fish market since 1719 . As this material was not found to be permanent, it soon had to be replaced. In 1722 the "Brunnengesellschaft von 1722" was founded, which commissioned a sculptor to design a sandstone fountain. The fountain, built in 1742, had a well box that was decorated with reliefs . They showed Cupid and Psyche between flower arrangements under two dolphins . The actual fountain figure represented Minerva , the goddess of wisdom, the arts and crafts.

The fountain stayed in its original location for 122 years. In the course of the expansion of the fish market, it had to give way to a horse-drawn tram stop and was moved to the courtyard of the orphanage on Königstrasse in 1864. The next change of location took place during the First World War . The well has now been divided. The Minerva figure, already damaged at this point, was housed in the cellar of the old town hall, the fountain basin initially in the Holy Spirit Chapel . In 1929 the basin - without the fountain figure - was placed on the Münzmarkt. In 1942 it was dismantled again and stored in the warehouse of the civil engineering office. It was only put up again 20 years later, this time in the green space on Billrothstrasse.

In 1989, Hans Kock replaced the badly damaged old Minerva figure with a new one. After the fish market was renovated, the fountain was moved again. It is now in the northern part of the market square, where it originally stood.
