Miracle des tickets
Miracle of the ticket (dt. Miracle of Billettes ) is the name of a stained glass window , located in the Church of St-Etienne-du-Mont in Paris is. The window in the Chapelle des Catéchismes, accessible through a connecting passage from the choir , was made in the second quarter of the 17th century.
description
The arched window consists of two scenes and originally did not belong together. The crucifixion scene in the middle and above Christ showing a host belonged to two different windows in the chapel of St. Genoveva were in the church of St-Étienne-du-Mont.
Miracles of tickets
All parts of the window relate thematically to the “ Miracle of Billettes ”, the oldest written representation of which dates from 1322 and which has been varied many times since then. Afterwards a Parisian Jew bought a consecrated host from a Christian maid. At the meeting of the Jewish community, those present tried to destroy the host with knives and nails, but they did not succeed. Suddenly blood dripped from the host, and when it was thrown into boiling water, the water would have turned into blood. One version of the story tells of the appearance of the crucified on the undestroyed host. This event was described as the miracle of Billettes .
The host offense was repeatedly accused of the Jewish population in the following centuries and served as a reason for persecution.
presentation
The central scene depicts Christ on the cross with a large host under his feet. The cross stands in a boiling kettle as a sign that Christ himself was martyred again in the changed host.
Further scenes from the legend are shown at the bottom right and left: the maid, dressed in white, hands the host to a man marked with the Jewish hat and receives a valuable dress from him. After receiving communion in this dress, she begins to regret what she did. In the assembly of the Jews she witnesses the iniquity - the Jew in a hat fills the fire with a bellows, another tries to pierce the host with a nail - and conceals the undamaged host in a bowl. In this bowl she brings them back to the church and receives forgiveness for their sin from the priest.
In the upper scene, Christ shows a host against the background of a city. The evangelists are depicted to the right and left of him .
