Mirek Kaufman (born April 15, 1963 in Žatec ) is a contemporary Czech painter .

Life

From 1983 to 1989 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then alternated between 1990 and 1994 to study in France (1991 to 1992: Paris, 1992 to 1993: Geneva, ARTES, Fondation / Samuel Buffat Foundation, 1993: Epernay, 1993 to 1994: La Chaux-de-Fonds)

From the beginning, Mirek Kaufman's work was focused on working with color and it is made up of extensive picture cycles. He found his inspiration in the infinite space of cosmology and scientific experiment. As examples of his creative projects, the cycle “Dark Blue Velvet” (“Tmavomodrý samet”) can be cited from the chronology of his work, freely inspired by David Lynch's cycle of restless waters and the series of images “Below the Surface”, which minimalistically depicts the events in the Represents microcosm. The latter is based on a collaboration with scientists from the French research institute INSERM (dedicated to human health), which became the motivation for the project “Between Science and Color” (“Mezi vědou a barvou”). The pictures exhibited under the title “Into the Unknown” were aimed at the near and distant cosmos. The limited scale and the flowing into one another of the layers of paint are tending towards a project of the past called "Liquid Sands". Here Kaufman expresses the limited possibilities of working with color. For his painting, the fluid is a specific characteristic, which in a figurative sense also carries feelings of instability and threat. With this thematic anchoring, too, the painter approaches the picture completely impartially, and often without prior preparation he works freely with his color material. Although the spatial and artistic abstraction is one of the elementary features of his work, he has been striving to capture the physical side of human existence since his first attempts at painting.

In addition to painting, which is his main work, he is interested in photography and occasionally illustrates and designs graphic design for authorized books. In these parallel activities, too, the focus is always on connecting the media mentioned with the world of painting. Accordingly, one often sees that the photographic cycles merge the boundaries between the image, the purely photographic and the flowing painting.

In the 2010s, his work increasingly dealt with more coherent cycles of mainly large formats, which have been presented repeatedly both in the Czech Republic and abroad under the working title “Liquid Painting”.
