Miren Karmele Azkarate Villar (born November 27, 1955 in San Sebastián ) is a politician, professor of Basque Philology and Académica der Euskaltzaindia ( Royal Academy of the Basque Language ). She was also Minister of Culture and Spokesperson for the Government of the Basque Country.

biography

Miren Azkarate was born in San Sebastián on November 27, 1995 . She studied linguistics at the Universidad de Deusto and obtained a PhD in Basque philology on the subject of composites in Basque at the Universidad del País Vasco ( University of the Basque Country ).

Between 1978 and 1988 she taught morphosyntax and lexicography at the Philological Faculty of the Universidad de Deusto . Since 1988 she has taught at the University of the Basque Country , where she is Professor of Basque Philology. From 1996 to 1997 she was Vice-Rector of Basque at the University.

She has been a member of the Euskaltzaindia since 1983 and in 1992 was awarded the title euskaltzain oso (full member) of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language (seat 23). This made her the first woman to receive this title.

Miren Azkarate was Minister of Culture for the Basque Government in the seventh and eighth legislative periods from 2001 to 2009 and Spokesperson for the Basque Government from 2004 to 2009 during the tenure of Juan José Ibarretxe .

From 2011 to 2018 she was a council member of San Sebastián .
