Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones , the authors of the musical with the longest running time in history, The Fantasticks , which has been played continuously in New York since 1960, worked the multi-award-winning children's book by Emily Arnold McCully , Mirette on the High Wire , into an imaginative one Musical for the whole family. In 1996, Steve Barton created the title character of Bellini in the world premiere of the new musical, Mirette . Kelly Maby as Mirette and Jerry Vichi as Max were also seen in other roles . The musical was performed at the Norma Terris Theater in Chester , Connecticut , USA from August 1st to 25th, 1996 . The music for this comes from Harvey Schmidt, the lyrics were written by Tom Jones and the book by Elizabeth Diggs.

Mirette tells a poetic fairy tale from the world of the circus. The fairytale story takes place in Paris around 1890. Ten-year-old Mirette has a crush on an aging tightrope walker. Against her mother's wishes, he teaches Mirette how to dance tightrope. His nerves run through when they appear together, but Mirette can win the audience's sympathies with her charm and artistry.
