Mirosław Graf (born June 5, 1959 ) is a former Polish ski jumper and current mayor of Szklarska Poreba. He is considered to be the inventor of the V-style .

Career

Graf initially started for the Julia Szklarska Poreba association . He was trained there in 1969 by Franciszek Szczyrbak. Graf moved to Śnieżka Karpacz for five years and finally to Legia Zakopane in the Polish ski jumping stronghold . After he had a broken rib while jumping in 1969 and twisted his ankle, he began a correspondingly painless way of ski jumping, in which he spread the skis in the shape of a V to the side. With this so-called V-style, he made further and safe jumps possible. Despite these successes, the judges gave him bad marks around 15 to 16 points. It was not until the late 1980s that the V-style found its way into the world through the Swede Jan Boklöv and finally became standard. In a competition in Karpacz Graf showed the longest jump, but in the end only finished fourth because of the poorer grades. In his style he improved the hill record in Miłków , Kottmar , Karpacz (73.5 m) and Lubawka (75.5 m). In 1980 he took part in the Ski Jumping World Cup. However, he was largely unsuccessful and ended his career in 1982.

After the end of his active time, Graf graduated from the Sports University in Warsaw . In 1989 he jumped again in Szklarska Poręba , where he was able to improve the hill record again. He later worked as a physical education teacher and trainer. He is also a board member of the Nordic Combined Commission at the Polish Ski Association. He headed a ski jumping and Nordic combined association, the UKS GRAF-ski. Since November 2014 he has been the mayor of Szklarska Poręba.
