The Mirounga Point is a headland on the south coast of King George Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is on the east bank of Potter Cove .
Argentine scientists named it in 1966 as Punta Baliza (Spanish for beacon tip ) and later Punta Elefante (Spanish for (sea) elephant tip , English Elephant Point ) after the southern elephant seals that live here . In order to avoid confusion with Elephant Point on Livingston Island , the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided in 1985 to rename it using the Latin generic name for elephant seals.
