Misako Watanabe ( Japanese 渡 辺 美 佐 子 Watanabe Misako ; born October 23, 1932 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese actress .

Life

Misako Watanabe was born in Tokyo in 1932. She took acting lessons at the local theater company Haiyūza ( 俳 優 座 ) and received her first small film role in The Tower of the Lilies in 1953 at the age of nineteen .

In 1963 Watanabe played the lead female role in the musical film Sanada Fūunroku and in the action film Hunt for the Beast . A year later she was seen in her best-known role as the second wife in the horror film Kwaidan by Masaki Kobayashi . In the following years Watanabe acted in several dozen films and television series.

Her later film appearances include roles in Shiawase no Pan from 2012 and in the award-winning drama Fune o Amu from 2013. In 2016, Watanabe starred in all eight episodes of the miniseries Princess Maison , which is based on an anime of the same name. She is still active as an actress today.

Misako Watanabe has received several awards for her acting. In 1959 she received the Blue Ribbon Award for best supporting actress in Hateshinaki yokubô . In 1997, the Japanese government awarded her the country's Medal of Honor , followed by the Order of the Rising Sun in 2004.
