Loquat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The medlar is a Hessian drink specialty , which is mainly offered in Frankfurt apple wine bars. The alcoholic drink is a combination of the apple brandy Calvados and a pickled fruit, the so-called medlar. However, it is not the common medlar traditionally widespread in the region , but the Japanese loquat (English loquat , Spanish níspero japonés ), which does not belong to the medlar genus . Their fruit tastes sour and sweet, and the aroma is a little reminiscent of apples to peaches.

history

Probably in the 1970s, the innkeepers in Frankfurt started offering their guests the apple brandy Calvados with a medlar fruit. Already in the 1960s, hard liquor is said to have been drunk with cider (see Herrengedeck ) and the then small apple in the Calvados glass was at some point replaced by a medlar. The medlar was already known in connection with cider, as the real medlar was used in earlier times to clarify and preserve cider to make it more drinkable.

preparation

The Japanese loquat blooms in winter, so with the temperatures prevailing in Germany, fruits usually do not form. Instead, canned fruits are used, which typically come from Spain or Asia. For a loquat, about 2 cl apple brandy and the fruit on a toothpick are put in a glass. Then a little fruit juice from the can can be added.
