The IPAI-28 Super Surubim was a development of the Brazilian IPAI, Escola de Engenharia de Sâo Carlos .
History and construction
The Aeroclube de Rio Claro had been using the IPT-16 Surubim for some time . In 1978 the aeronautical engineer Silvio de Oliveira was commissioned to improve the aircraft's performance. Work on it lasted almost a year, during which time Oliveira developed another aircraft that inherited the best features of the Surubim and should have improved aerobatic properties. He planned an all-metal airplane in a half-shell construction with two seats in a tandem configuration. The aircraft was designed as a low-wing aircraft with a conventional tail unit and fixed, braced tail wheel landing gear. The cockpit canopy could be pushed back and could have been thrown off in flight. The machine was to be powered by a Ranger 6-440-C4 six-cylinder in-line engine with 146 kW. Since the club did not have the means to finance the construction on its own, they turned to the IPAI, Escola de Engenharia de Sâo Carlos, and sought support from a group of sponsors whose spokesman was the Brazilian stunt pilot Alberto Bertelli . The aircraft previously known internally as the Super Surubim was now officially designated as IPAI-28 Super Surubim . Many companies, including Embraer and Neiva , helped. The work on the machine, which was built in the workshops of the aero club, however, dragged on. When the machine was almost finished, Alberto Bertelli died in 1982 and the sponsors withdrew, whereupon the work was interrupted. It was not decided how to proceed until 1989 when the club received a new aerobatic aircraft from the ministry. Then the work was finally stopped.
