Missa normativa

The Missa normativa is a prototype of the Holy Mass created in the context of the liturgical reform after the Second Vatican Council from 1967 from the transition period between the Tres abhinc annos instruction of 1964. Tres abhinc annos essentially had a version of the Tridentine language translated into the national language Trade fair introduced temporarily. According to some council adviser, in particular the consultant Coetus X , John Wagner , but that these measures did not go far enough. The aim was therefore to free the missal from all rubricisms that were perceived as medieval . On the basis of some Quaestiones tractandae of Coetus X , therefore, basic principles of a further reform arose in April 1964. On Monday, October 24, 1967, the new type of mass, the Missa normativa , was “performed” for the first time at the first Synod of Bishops ad experimentum . Annibale Bugnini assesses the event as follows:

“Occorre dire subito che l'esperimento non riuscì. Anzi, in certo modo, produsse l'effetto contrario e pesò sulla votazione in senso negativo. "

“You have to say right away that the experiment did not succeed. Rather, it had the opposite effect in a certain way and had a negative effect on the vote. "

The result of the vote was extremely ambiguous: 71 bishops voted for (placet), 43 against (non placet), and 62 saw it as a basis for discussion (placet iuxta modum).
