The Mississippi Export Railroad (MSE) is an American Short Line -Eisenbahngesellschaft in Mississippi . The company is based in Moss Point .

history

In 1920 the Alabama and Mississippi Railroad (formerly Pascagoula, Moss Point and Northern Railroad ), leading north from Pascagoula, had to file for bankruptcy. Alfred F. Dantzler ( LN Dantzler Lumber Company ) and Gregory M. Luce as owners of several companies (mainly forest and paper companies) were dependent on the railway line to the Gulf of Mexico and decided to become active themselves. On November 15, 1922, the Mississippi Export Railroad was founded with equity of $ 150,000. The company received the right to organize and operate a railway line from Pascagoula to Luce Farms in George County .

Initially, the company leased the 68-kilometer Pascagoula- Evanston line from the Alabama and Mississippi Railroad and renewed the superstructure. Operations started on February 1, 1923. On April 17, 1923, the route section was purchased from the previous owner of A&M HC Turner for $ 110,000. The formal transfer of ownership took place on October 1, 1926.

In 1925, the Mississippi Central Railroad tried to take over the railway company. However, the project was rejected. The first diesel locomotive was purchased in 1941 and the last steam locomotive was decommissioned five years later.

In 1929 the paper manufacturer International Paper (with a paper mill in Moss Point from 1928-2001) acquired around a third of the company's shares. The Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad invested in the company, first with 25%. Even today, the Canadian National Railway (as the successor to GM&N) still holds 38% of the share capital.

The railway line runs between Pascagoula and Evanston largely in a north-south direction. In Evanston there is a transition to the Canadian National Railway and in Pascagoula to the CSX Transportation (originally Louisville and Nashville Railroad ). The largest structure is the swing bridge over the Escatawpa River .

The deep water port of Pascagoula is also connected.

Locomotives

The Mississippi Export Railroad mainly used 1'D and 2'C steam locomotives after it was founded. These were all taken out of service or sold by 1946.

In 1941 the first diesel locomotives were acquired with the GE 44-ton switcher . The conversion to diesel locomotives was completed by 1946. At the beginning of the 1950s, the vehicle fleet comprised three 44-tonne trucks and four GE 70- tonne switchers . In 1946, the prototype 4-S manufactured by Ingalls Shipbuilding was used as an experiment .

The current fleet includes an EMD SW1500 (No. 64), three EMD GP38-2 (No. 65 to 67), an EMD GP50 (No. 68) and an EMD SW900 (No. 4301; formerly CCRC No. 901)
