Mister Zero is a strategic board game by Wilfried Bauer and Rudolf Schweiker that was published by dacapo Spiele in 1985. In the same year it was included in the shortlist for Game of the Year.

Background and game material

Mister Zero is a strategic board game that is played on an abstract game board with thirteen points connected by lines and 10 number chips each in two colors, red and green, as well as a black pawn ("Mister Zero"). The task of the players is to control the Mister Zero by cleverly placing their chips in such a way that he collects as many of his own chips as possible and thus distributes points.

Style of play

Mister Zero, board game

The game board is placed in the middle of the playing field and the players decide who gets which color and which number chips. If four players play, two players each form a team, with one player receiving the even and one player the odd number chips. The black pawn is placed on the dot in the middle of the game board.

The game is played in two phases. In the first phase the players place their number chips on the playing field, in the second phase Mister Zero moves along the lowest number chips across the playing field.

In the first phase, the players or teams alternately place a chip with the number side up on the connecting lines between the points. The red player starts the game and first places one of his number chips, where he is free to put it down. The players are free to choose where to place their numbers, but only one player can place the lowest number on the piers to the starting point of Mister Zero. If a player can no longer place his chip in accordance with the rules at the end of the placement phase because it corresponds to the lowest number of the opponent in the center, he must place it face down on one of the lines. This chip later determines the first step of Mister Zero if the opponent does not place a lower chip on one of the remaining lines. The zero may be placed upside down in the middle as a second chip at any time.

When all the chips have been placed, Mister Zero begins his journey from point to point. It starts from the center of the game board and always follows the line on which the chip with the lowest number is located. All chips he moves over are turned over, which blocks the respective bridge. If Mister Zero comes to a point from which two identical digits continue, he chooses the path further to the right, viewed from his previous movement, clockwise. If Mister Zero comes to one of the two color fields, the corresponding player takes all turned over chips of his color from the board. If Mister Zero does not get any further, the game ends and the party with the most chips delivered wins the game.
