Mitophagy

Mitophagy (from ancient Greek μίτος mítos , German 'thread' and ancient Greek φαγεῖν phagein , German 'eat' ) describes a form of autophagocytosis in which mitochondria are specifically broken down by digestive vesicles enveloping mitochondria. These are dismantled and parts of them are put to further use.

Mitophagy can have several triggers:

  • Damage: Damaged mitochondria pose a danger to the cell due to the potential production of oxygen radicals (ROS). These must be eliminated.
  • Aging: Aged mitochondria can be limited in their performance and are potential sources of ROS.
  • Development: As red blood cells mature , the mitochondria are completely degraded.
  • Nutritional deficiency

A mitophagy defect is thought to play a role in Parkinson's disease . Mitophagy occurs, among other things, through the formation of omegasomes .
