The St. Johannes Baptist Chapel is a listed church building in Obersalwey , a district of Eslohe in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

There is no reliable knowledge about the origin of the chapel and the patronage of St. John's Beheading . There are probably remains of a previous chapel from perhaps Romanesque times in a wall section of the choir. In the long walls, too, a paragraph seems to be recognizable at the same height. The extension to the current form was probably carried out with little financial means. The masonry is about a meter thick, and there are also stones with beveled edges, similar to large pebbles . The medieval furnishings were destroyed during the Truchsessian turmoil or the Thirty Years' War . The chapel must also have suffered severe damage, because it was not mentioned during a visit to the Eslohe community around 1650, during which the auxiliary bishop Bernhard Frick consecrated various village chapels . The altar, whose year of construction cannot be proven, was renovated in 1672. From 1747 to 1748 the roof and the plaster were renewed, so the masonry must have stood for some time. In 1748 a weathercock with a copper knob was placed on the roof turret. Inside, an old hair plaster on a clay plaster layer has been preserved under the top layer . Further renovations are documented for 1775 and 1827. After the First World War , the exterior plaster was renewed. The church painter Franz Schrudde repainted the interior in 1931. An extensive renovation was carried out in 1986. The chapel was painted inside and out, it was drained, the cock was attached and the paintings were restored.

The apse of the single-nave building is in front. The barrel vault , which was later plastered, consists of its own wooden angles. The woods made of oak were wrapped in straw and clay and thus joined together. The slate roof is crowned with a roof turret. In this hangs a bell with a diameter of about 50 cm. It bears the inscription "Soli deo gloria 1780" A much older previous bell was probably there. The entrance and the windows are arched; the two parts of the front door are different in size. The oak door is adorned with iron fittings and decorations that suggest it was built after 1250.
