history

Mitsubishi's origins can be traced back to 1870 when its founder, Yataro Iwasaki, set up a small shipping company.

During the next few years, businesses were set up on land that traded real estate and dealt with the mining of raw materials to meet the increasing demand of Japan's then burgeoning industry. The rapid development of the mining industry and the Mitsubishi Mining Company Ltd. founded in 1920 made the success possible for the Mitsubishi Materials Group, which merged on December 21, 1990 from Mitsubishi Metal and Mitsubishi Mining & Cement.

In total, Mitsubishi Materials Corporation's business activities comprise eight areas. Metalworking, automotive and aviation technology, electronics, environment and recycling, aluminum storage media, energy and jewelry & gold.
