Mohamed Saïl 1936

Saïl Ameriane Mohamed Ben Amerzaine , also written Saïl Mohamed Ameriane (born October 14, 1894 in Tarbeit-Beni-Ouglis ( Kabylia ), † April 1953 ) was an Algerian and French anarchist who also fought in the Spanish Civil War.

Born in Kabylia , in the north-east of Algeria, he attended school in Algeria. During the First World War, Saïl Mohamed was drafted into the French army, then interned for insubordination and desertion . After his release, he settled in Paris, where he was an activist for the Union Anarchiste (UA) and the Confédération Générale du Travail-Syndicaliste Revolutionnaire (CGT-SR). With his friend Sliman Kiouane he founded the “Committee for the Defense of the Indigenous Algerians” in 1923, one of the first national liberation movements in Algeria. But at the same time he fought against the power of the local marabouts . From 1924 he published articles in anarchist magazines such as Le Libertaire and La Voix Libertaire . In 1932 he became director of L'Eveil Social magazine . In the same year he was charged with anti-militarist articles. In 1934 he was sentenced to prison for possession of weapons .

In 1936 he was in the Sébastien Faure unit of the French-speaking section of the Durruti column (where Simone Weil was also for a while), an anarchist militia in the Spanish Civil War. He was injured near Zaragoza and returned to France, where he continued his anti-militarist and anti-colonial activities.

He was a passionate anti-Stalinist and therefore rejected the support of the International Red Aid , an institution of the French Communist Party.
