The Mitsubishi Type 73 ( Japanese 73 式 装甲車 ) is a Japanese track -driven armored personnel carrier from the 1970s.
description
In the late 1960s, the Japanese ground self-defense forces were looking for a successor to the outdated SU 60 troop transport . An advertisement followed. The Mitsubishi Type 73 was ultimately able to prevail against its competitors. In 1973, serial production began and 225 tanks were made for the Japanese armed forces, which are or were the only users of the vehicle.
The armament consists of a heavy 12.7 mm Browning M2 machine gun and a 7.62 mm machine gun. There is also night vision equipment and NBC protection. Only a small number of modified vehicles can float.
The successor to the Type 73 is the Mitsubishi Type 89 infantry fighting vehicle, which is equipped with a 35 mm automatic cannon from Oerlikon Contraves and better meets today's requirements. Remaining examples of the Type 73 in the Japanese army serve as artillery tractors .
