John Fontenay's summer house

The building at Mittelweg 183 in Hamburg-Rotherbaum is John Fontenay's former garden house . It is popularly called "Goethe's garden house" due to its construction.

location

The building is located on Mittelweg at the confluence of Klein Fontenay Street in the Rotherbaum district next to Fontenay's former residential building near the southwestern bank of the Hamburg Outer Alster .

history

The house was built around 1815 and first mentioned in 1822. It was originally a double apartment building with the house numbers 183 and 184. The building was not damaged during the First and Second World Wars .

After the board of the Fontenay Foundation decided in 1954 to grant the building rights for the property to the city of Hamburg, the city of Hamburg considered using the building as a guest house for the nearby Max Planck Institute. However, these plans were not implemented; instead, the building managed by SAGA fell into disrepair in the following years. In 1997 the last tenant moved out. On June 24, 2000, the house was badly damaged by arson. Since no structural work was carried out in the following months, the newspaper Bild referred to the building in November 2000 as “Rotherbaum's haunted house”. The house was renovated more than two years later by the Foundation for Monument Preservation and has been rented out by the Foundation ever since.

The house is now a listed building.
