Middle way 185

At Mittelweg 185 in Hamburg-Rotherbaum is the former home of the ship broker and owner John Fontenay . The building, built in 1816, is a listed building.

location

The building is located at number 185 on the east side of Mittelweg street near the southwestern bank of Hamburg's Outer Alster in the Rotherbaum district. Next to the house at number 183 is the former Fontenays garden house.

history

Fontenay acquired the property on Mittelweg on February 7, 1807 and had a residential building built on it. Because of the swampy subsoil, he had 364 piles driven into the ground for the foundation . Up until the billeting of French troops in 1810, his family used the house permanently as a residential building, which was unusual at the time, as wealthy Hamburg residents usually only lived outside the Wallring in the summer months . After Fontenay and his family left Hamburg in 1810 during the French era , Napoleon's troops destroyed the building. After his return to the Hanseatic city, Fontenay had a new house built on the property, which he probably moved into around 1820 with his family and staff.

Since the building was in poor condition at the end of the Second World War , the city considered demolishing the building in order to build new apartments on this site; however, the plans were not implemented. In 1966, as part of the planning for a tunnel under the Outer Alster, the building was again intended for demolition; The neighboring Max Planck Institute was also interested in the property. However, it was left to a Hamburg antiques dealer who had the building renovated with the help of a monument conservator .

The building is now privately rented.
