Midnight thriller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The midnight thriller was a traditional weekly series of broadcasts by Deutschlandfunk , which was broadcast from January 1968 to March 2020 in the night from Friday to Saturday at 12:05 a.m.

history

From January 1968, the 55-minute format in the DLF presented radio play productions from German-language radio play archives, primarily radio productions, as well as current productions from other broadcasters. As the title of the series suggests, the genre of detective radio plays was primarily used , but science fiction productions and horror radio plays were also occasionally used .

If the playing time of the radio plays was below the broadcast duration of just under an hour, the remaining time was filled either with references to the productions of the coming weeks or with pieces of instrumental music. Radio plays, the original running time of which would have exceeded the fixed broadcasting time, were shortened by the broadcaster or broadcast in several parts. Multi-part productions, such as the Paul Temple radio plays , which mostly consisted of eight parts, were re-edited so that they could be broadcast in a maximum of four episodes.

On April 4, 2020 , the midnight thriller in the DLF was replaced by the new Blue Crime format , which is dedicated to the topic of “true crimes”. The end of the series led to a reaction in the radio play scene, in which an attempt was initially unsuccessful to persuade the DLF to give in. The midnight crime tradition is now being continued within a radio play forum.
