Miu Hin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miu Hin ( Chinese  苗 显 , Pinyin Miáo Xiǎn , Cantonese  Miu 4 Hin 2 ) was one of the five Shaolin elders who survived the destruction of the northern monastery during the Qing Dynasty .

background

Miu Hin is the father of Miu Tsui Fa and the grandfather of Fong Sai-Yuk, who later became a famous martial artist and popular folk hero (although it is unknown whether Fong Sai-Yuk really lived). According to folk tales, Miu Hin was a master of the 5-form style and various Shaolin martial arts. He passed this knowledge on to his daughter, Miu Tsui Fa, who in turn taught her son, Fong Sai-Yuk. Miu Hin is said to have helped the other elders invent Wing Chun . Although Miu Hin, like the other elders, actually lived, the truth of the stories about him is questionable.

Escape from the destruction of Shaolin

Miu Hin was one of the elders of the northern Shaolin monastery before it was destroyed. While on the one hand he was an elder of the Shaolin monks, he was not committed to any particular belief. When the Qing Dynasty triumphed over the Ming Dynasty in 1644 , many actors of the Ming Dynasty found shelter in monasteries and temples. This, and the fact that the Shaolin monastery provided shelter for many rebels against the Qing dynasty, led the Qing to attack and destroy the Shaolin monastery (either 1647, 1674 or 1732). According to legend, Miu Hin escaped the destruction with Jee Sin (至善 禅师), Fung Dou Dak (冯道德), Bak Mei (白眉 道人) and Ng Mui (五 梅 大师), making them the Five Elders of Shaolin made. The elders traveled for over a year before they reached the southern Shaolin Monastery in what is now Sichuan Province .

Battle with Bak Mei and death

After reaching the southern Shaolin Monastery in what is now Sichuan Province, a heated argument took place between Bak Mei and the four other elders about how to act politically and how many students they should have. Bak Mei favored extensive political engagement and accepting more students, while the others advocated a secluded life with few students. This disagreement eventually led to a fight between Jee Sin and Bak Mei, which resulted in Jee Sin being killed by Bak Mei. Irritated by Jee Sin's death, Miu Hin Bak Mei is said to have challenged another duel to avenge Jee Sin's death. Although the fight is said to have ended very closely, Miu Hin was eventually killed by Bak Mei during the fight. After Miu Hin's death, Fung Dou Dak Bak Mei challenged one last fight. As he witnessed the two duels and had studied Bak Mei's techniques, Fong Dou Dak was able to wound Bak Mei so much that he died of his injuries a little later.

Hung Kuen Kung Fu of the Miu Hin lineage

The Hung Kuen Kung Fu comes directly from Miu Hin. According to other sources, the temple was destroyed by the Ching and the 5 elders had to flee and consequently there was no fight with Bak Mei. Miu Hin became a salt trader and taught his daughter Miu Tzu Fah. Their son Fong Sai Yuk became a great fighter. The Hung Kuen of the Miu Hin line is mainly characterized by low standing and the mastery of the five different animal forms (crane, tiger, snake, dragon and leopard).
